The name

A Scottish industrialist.
A Spanish engineer.

In the 1920s a Spanish engineer named Juan de la Cierva had built something the aviation establishment had no category for: a rotor that kept turning on the air itself, so an aircraft could not stall. He had the engineering. He did not have the capital.

James George Weir — a Scottish industrialist, aviator, and later a Director of the Bank of England — backed him, and in March 1926 the two formed the Cierva Autogiro Company with Weir as its chairman. The rotor that followed became the direct ancestor of the helicopter.

We took the name because that is the arrangement we are interested in: capital that understands the engineering, engineering that is actually funded, and the industrial execution that turns the two into something that flies. An accord, not a transaction.

De la Cierva's C.4 makes the first sustained flight of an autogiro, at Getafe, Spain — an aircraft that could descend without stalling.
